Early October 11th, 2011, the bodies of 26-year-old Trevor James Greenway and 36-year-old Jason Trundle were found in a running SUV parked in a cemetery on Edmonton's southern edge. Both men had been shot.
More details about the investigation can be read here.
Trundle's family in Lloydminster were hit hard when they got call from police telling them Jason had died.
"It's devastating," his father Ken recounted for the Edmonton Sun.
"We are in disbelief and brokenhearted," Jason's aunt, Shirley Armstrong, said.
The family was trying hard to puzzle what was behind Jason's death.
In June, the flush truck operator suffered a crushed hand on an oilfield job site. Physiotherapy was prescribed, and Jason headed to Edmonton with his dog in his girlfriend's black GMC Denali SUV for treatment. Days later he was dead.
Although he had some problems with alcohol in the past, Ken said his son "hated drugs." But like most kids, Jason did know some of the people he grew up with were involved in the scene.
The man he was found with, Trevor Greenway, was no stranger to drugs (he had served time for cocaine trafficking) or violence (having pleaded guilty to assault and impaired driving causing death).
How the two hooked up in Edmonton wasn't known. Friends said the pair weren't buddies, but simply acquaintances. After all, the town they both lived in (that straddles the Alberta/Saskatchewan border) only had a population of about 25,000.
"We know in our hearts that Jason would never knowingly have put himself in such harm's way unless forced to do so," aunt Shirley said.
Ken said Jason, who did not have any children, loved his job and his family.
"He was always happy and jovial and cracking jokes. He's very caring of his mom and me," he said about his only son.
"I have never been afraid to call him my boy. I just loved him a whole lot.
"He was very generous to me in the last few years. We are seniors and he was very concerned about us all the time and always checking in. I am going to miss him an awful lot."
