Police continue to investigate what was initially thought to be suspicious death on Edmonton's south side.

Paramedics responding to a "medical investigation" first brought officers to a home at 4619 43 Avenue about 4:30 p.m. on December 1st, 2010.

Reports indicated a woman's body was found inside the home and that police considered the death as being "suspicious" in nature.

"Homicide investigators are now assisting with the investigation, but they haven't taken it over," Staff Sgt. Brad Goeson told media.

"Homicide investigators are routinely brought out to suspicious deaths," a police spokesman later said. "That's just how we do business – that's protocol."

Goeson added that officers would be guarding the scene overnight.

Police said they were speaking to the woman’s family, but indicated there were problems in doing so due to a language barrier.

Detectives waited for results of autopsy (scheduled to have taken place the next morning) to determine the course of their investigation.

"The autopsy should be able to determine whether this individual died of natural causes or if in fact this is a criminal matter we're dealing with," a police spokesman said.

Forensic staff remained at the home for rest of the week. The female victim's name was not officially released.

If declared a homicide, it would have marked the second time in two days that police were involved with a woman's body found in a home.

On November 30th, 49-year-old Sandra Darlene Lamb was found dead in her Capilano residence. Her murder remains unsolved.

On December 13th, 2010, it was learned it could take up to a month for police to learn how a woman died in her Mill Woods home.

Investigators said they were waiting for final reports and autopsy results to be completed to determine whether the death was criminal in nature.

"Every case is different," a police spokesman said.

"It depends on a lot of factors. Some are obvious in the beginning and some are not. It all depends on the medical examiner to determine the cause of death."

Death ruled a homicide

On February 10th, 2011, police announced that further medical testing, including a toxicology report, determined the death of Jaswinder Kaur Takhar was due to homicide.

Cause was not revealed, but detectives said they did not believe the murder was a random act.

"We don't have any suspects at this point but we are looking for any information," a police spokesman said.
