Edmonton police charged Jordan Cordell Steinhauer with second-degree murder and a weapons offence. He was set to make his first court appearance on September 21st, 2010.
Investigators said no further information was being released as the case remained an active criminal matter.
However, RCMP said in a statement that Steinhauer had been charged "in connection with a murder that occurred in Edmonton, AB in August of this year."
This was the first indication of when police think McPherson died. His body was discovered on September 7th.
Second arrest made; Canada-wide warrant issued
On September 21st, 2010, police arrested a 17-year-old male and charged him with second-degree murder and possession of a weapon.
The teen, who cannot be named under provision of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was held at the Edmonton Young Offender Centre and was to make his first court appearance on September 24th.
A Canada-wide warrant was also issued for a third man wanted in connection with McPherson's murder.
Investigators believed 19-year-old Emery Dean Cardinal was in northern Alberta and they encouraged him to turn himself in to authorities.
Police continued to remain tight-lipped on details, only saying the matter remained an active investigation.
Third man turns himself in
It seemed Emery Dean Cardinal heard the message – turning himself in to police at the RCMP detachment in Fort McMurray on September 25th, 2010.
Cardinal was arrested without incident and was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a weapon.
The 19-year-old was scheduled to be returned to Edmonton within the week.
Police were not expected to release further details on the matter until it reached the courts.
