On August 26th, 2010, Manfred Geisendorf was alone in his home near 117th Avenue and 91st Street when he heard a man breaking into his house.

The feisty 73-year-old defended his turf but suffered a severe beating. He was later found by a neighbour who took him to hospital.

When Geisendorf died 11 weeks later from complications related to the injuries he received in the assault, the medical examiner's office contacted police.

"He just succumbed to his injuries. So, unfortunately, now we're looking at homicide," a police spokesman said after Geisendorf's death on November 11th.

Police already had a suspect in their sights and issued a Canada-wide warrant for 19-year-old Drayton Steinhauer.

The supplied photo of Steinhauer indicated police had dealt with him before. After Geisendorf died, investigators wanted to deal with him in connection with a second-degree murder charge.

In their November 15th release to media police said Steinhauer, originally from Saddle Lake, Alberta, was believed to frequent Edmonton's city core including Churchill Square.

The next day, with a lawyer in tow, Steinhauer turned himself in at police headquarters.

"We're always very grateful to the media that can get a picture out and a name out and, at that time, for the suspect to turn around immediately and turn himself in is a great relief to us," a police spokesman said.

Steinhauer was charged with second-degree murder, arson, and break and enter with the intent to commit robbery.

Police said no weapons were used in the attack.

There was no word on court dates. Steinhauer remains in custody.
