A dispute between longtime friends over a male buddy appeared to be at the root of an altercation that left one woman dead and another facing second-degree murder charges.

Police received several 911 calls at about 2:30 a.m. July 31st, 2010 reporting that a woman had been injured.

Emergency services arrived at a condominium unit 108 at 14520 52 Street to find the woman lying outside.

The woman, who appeared to be in her 20s, was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital where she died at about 6:00 a.m.

At first, investigators regarded the death as suspicious. The appearance of homicide detectives and the police forensics unit were the first indications that Edmonton had recorded its fifteenth murder of the year.

Details emerged that a fight had taken place in a lower unit of the three-storey Pyramid Estate Condominiums complex, normally the home of a father and son who both worked for Telus – read more »

Insp. Howie McCann said there were at least three people at the scene when police arrived, but conceded others may have left beforehand.

"We are still interviewing people. It's one of these scenes where we come on and there's a lot of people and a lot of commotion so if we have to sort everything out," McCann said.

"And homicide got involved a little later so they are still fresh on the scene."

No details were released on what kind of injuries the woman sustained or if they occurred during what was being described as an altercation. Several neighbours said officers canvassing the area told them the woman had been stabbed.

Police identified two people as persons of interest but said no one had been taken in custody. However, one complex resident said she saw a young man being led away in handcuffs.

It was later confirmed two persons were questioned at downtown headquarters.

Police combed the area around the complex. One neighbour said they told her they were looking for a knife. Forensic staff and detectives were seen filing in and out of the condo for most of the day.

On August 2nd, friends and family had identified the victim as 23-year-old Angel Agnes Priscilla Bird from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

Bird had travelled to Edmonton to be with her fiance who had a court date for breaching his parole. The woman was staying in the city with a roommate.

Later on August 2nd, police announced an arrest had been made in the case, saying a 19-year-old female had been picked up early the morning before by patrol members.

Investigators said the name of the accused and the charges she faced would be released after an autopsy had been completed.

Police said the two women knew each other and that detectives believed an altercation between the pair began as a dispute over a male friend.

It was also revealed investigators had yet to locate the murder weapon, possibly a knife, and asked residents living in the area of 145th Avenue and 52nd Street to check the perimeter of their homes and yards.

On August 3rd, police confirmed that Angel Bird had died as a result of a stab wound to the chest.

Charged with second-degree murder and possession of a dangerous weapon was 19-year-old Ashley Rose Sinclair.

Sinclair remained in custody awaiting court dates.

Suspect sought

On August 18th, 2010 homicide detectives announced they were seeking a person they say assisted Sinclair in her attempts to evade police.

Arrest warrants were issued for 23-year-old Azem Klinaku. He faced charges of accessory to homicide after the fact, obstructing a peace officer, obstructing justice, and two counts of breach of recognizance.

"The connection is he's the ex-boyfriend of the accused," explained a police spokesman.

"He was not at the residence at the time of the incident. Basically through investigation, detectives were able to identify him as a suspect. He's not considered to be dangerous."

Still outstanding in the matter was the murder weapon, earlier identified by police as a knife.

"There's been enough evidence to lay charges, but we would still like to be able to locate the weapon," the spokesman said.

Although Klinaku is from Edmonton, he has ties to other cities. Police said they were unsure if Klinaku was still in the city.

Those with information regarding the knife or Klinaku's whereabouts were asked to contact Edmonton police at 780-423-4567, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or online at www.tipsubmit.com. Tips can also be text messaged.

Suspect captured

On September 22nd, 2010 police issued another appeal to media in their quest to locate Azem Klinaku.

Investigators said they believed he may be in Calgary as he had ties to that city.

The next day, at about 4:00 a.m,. police arrested Klinaku without incident at an apartment building located near 32nd Street and 119th Avenue.

He was charged with accessory to homicide after the fact, obstructing a peace officer, obstructing justice, and two counts of breach of recognizance.
