At about 7:50 a.m. June 16th, 2009 the body of an Edmonton Police officer was found in a vehicle in the Windermere Wal-Mart parking lot at Terwillegar Drive just south of Anthony Henday Drive.
A police spokesman said the death was "not suspicious." A concerned friend had been looking for the off-duty officer when his body was discovered in his personal vehicle.
A portion of the parking lot was cordoned off with police vehicles blocking public view until a black tent was erected. Forensic investigators detailed the scene in accordance with Edmonton Police Service policy.
After the medical examiner confirmed the officer's death was non-criminal in nature, Edmonton Police Chief Mike Boyd and the president of the Edmonton Police Association, Tony Simioni, appeared together at a brief news conference.
"The member's family and the Edmonton Police Service family are grieving the loss of a husband, a father, a son and a good friend," Boyd said.
At the request of the officer's family, police would not be releasing his name, Boyd added.
Boyd declined to take questions from reporters and Simioni did not offer a statement.
Within the tightknit police community, the death of the well-liked officer hit hard. Some were heard to say he was a pleasure to work with.
It was revealed that the officer had faced a number of recent career setbacks. The day before his body was discovered, the officer was involved in an internal affairs investigation following a complaint of assault against him while he was off-duty.
On June 19th a lengthy obituary appeared in the Edmonton Journal.
