WARNING

Brendan Malcolm McNaughton, 21, was stabbed to death on February 21st, 2009.

McNaughton was Edmonton's sixth homicide victim of the year.

Jayden Jeffery Zylinski, 19, was charged with second-degree murder, possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon, careless storage of a firearm, and careless storage of ammunition.

Nathan Gordon Gour, 21, and Christopher John George, 30, were each charged with one count of assault.

Police have laid charges in connection with Edmonton's sixth homicide of 2009 after a man was found dead early February 21st, 2009 near 182nd Street and 89th Avenue.

Police were attending to an unrelated matter at about 3:45 a.m. when a woman approached an officer and informed him of an injured man lying on the ground.

"He was escorted over to the area where our deceased is to check on the individual," S/Sgt Ryan Tebb told media.

"At that point he realised that the injuries were serious and he believed the individual had succumbed to his injuries at that point."

Despite the officer arriving within a minute of being notified, responding EMS pronounced the man dead at the scene. Early reports indicated the male was in his twenties and that he had suffered stab wounds.

Police later said the man had been involved in a fight with another male after drinking at the Nu Wave Bar at 18228 89 Avenue.

A number of other men joined in the altercation and the victim was stabbed. The group then fled the scene in a dark grey four-door car, possibly an older model BMW. The injured man was later found on a nearby walkway.

The suspects were described as four Caucasian males in their early 20s. Police believe the man and the group of males had been in the bar together earlier and that the fight took place after the pub had closed.

Officers said they were interested in speaking with anyone who was at the Nu Wave Bar late Friday or early Saturday, or who may have been in the pub's parking lot which is shared by a Mac's convenience store.

Veteran homicide detective Bill Clark said the homicide was likely a random act.

"That's what it appears to be at this time, but it's still early," Clark said.

"This young man was simply minding his own business. He wasn't causing problems in the bar, he wasn't causing problems outside the bar ... he was simply heading home."

Police couldn't confirm whether or not anyone else was injured during the fight but said it was a possibility.

On February 22nd police announced the homicide victim was 21-year-old Brendan Malcolm McNaughton. Cause of death was not issued but it was generally thought he died of stab wounds.

Search warrants were executed the same day and police arrested two persons in connection with McNaughton's death.

Jayden Jeffery Zylinski, 19, was charged with second-degree murder, possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon, careless storage of a firearm, and careless storage of ammunition.

The firearms charges against Zylinski stemmed from a search conducted at a west-end home.

Police also charged Nathan Gordon Gour, 21, with one count of assault.

Zylinski will appear in court on February 26th while Gour's date was set for March 9th.

Sources indicate neither of the two men had a previous criminal record.

A juvenile male was questioned and released. Officers said at the time they were still looking for a fourth male who may have been the first to initiate contact with McNaughton.

On February 23rd Christopher John George, 30, turned himself in to police at their West Division station and was charged with assault. George will also appear in court on March 9th.

There was no further word from police regarding additional charges.
