At about 8:45 p.m. September 25th, 2009 a woman driving by Mary Burlie Park, at 10465 97 Street north of the Edmonton Remand Centre, was approached by a woman claiming that her brother had been stabbed.

Carrie Houle had just left the Remand Centre after visiting her husband when a distraught woman banged on her SUV's window.

"She just said: 'Call the ambulance. My brother's been stabbed.'  There was blood on her hands.

"I phoned the police first and then I got out of the vehicle and went running to see if I could assist."

The woman led Houle to an alley near the park's gazebo where she saw a man in a plaid shirt gasping for air.

"I saw the gentleman laying on his left side ... in a pool of blood – his shirt was all full of blood."

With the victim was another unidentified woman who was shaking the man in an attempt to revive him. Houle told the second woman to leave him be.

The women told Houle that the attackers, two men and a woman, had fought over a can of beer.

Police arrived to find a 40-year-old man bleeding profusely from injuries received to his upper body.

The man was taken by ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said they were looking for at least three suspects and that there were indications the victim and suspects are known to each other.

Police worked overnight interviewing witnesses in an effort to determine exactly where in the park the stabbing took place.

While officers were combing the garbage-strewn park, another attack took place four blocks west, near 101st Street and 105th Avenue.

A man was taken to hospital after someone broke a bottle over his head. Police have not yet determined whether the attacks were related.
