A 17-year-old male died of a stab wound on April 25th, 2009.

He was Edmonton's ninth homicide victim of the year.

A 16-year-old male was charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Both the victim and the accused can't be named under provision of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

A brawl between two groups of teens outside apartment buildings near 7227 147 Avenue at about 2:40 a.m. April 25th, 2009 resulted in numerous calls to police.

"Upon arrival we found several people injured," Staff Sgt. Troy Carriere said.

One 17-year-old teen was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in critical condition. He died several hours later from apparent stab wounds.

Two other teens were also stabbed. A total of six men, ranging in age from 16 to 20, were placed in custody after some were located by Const. Kassian and Police Service Dog Chevy.

Police are still looking for other possible suspects and said that so far there were no indications of a gang or drug connection in the matter.

"We still haven't determined why these two parties got in the altercation that they did ... we can only assume that there was a party in one of these buildings," Carriere said.

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor and were surprised to see baseball bats being used.

"It's all too common that we see people like this carrying knives with them all the time, but the bat is a little unusual. Obviously there was some preparation by the group here," Carriere surmised.

While the victim's name was not officially released, relatives and friends said that a 17-year-old male died from a stab wound to the stomach.
