Chinatown shooting

Around 2:30 a.m. June 10th, 2008 police were called after man entered the rear of the All Happy Family Restaurant at 10011 106 Avenue suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds.

The male victim, in his late 20s, was transported to hospital where he remains in critical condition. Police have tentatively identified the man, something that should help detectives in determining a motive.

Spent shell casings from a large calibre semi-automatic pistol were located at the start of a blood trail leading to the back of the All Happy restaurant.

Investigators believe the shooting took place in front of the nearby Garden Bakery and Restaurant at 10019 106 Avenue.

Bullet strike marks could be seen on the walls and windows of the Garden Bakery building.

Witnesses were interviewed but no description of a suspect has been released. Police would not say whether the incident was gang-related.

The Edmonton Sun found an eyewitness to the shooting.

A homeless woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the paper she ducked for cover as she watched a gunman step out of a dark-coloured car and fire multiple shots at his victim. The driver of the car remained inside.

She said the victim had just come out of the Garden Bakery and Restaurant.

"There were two loud bangs and then the man fell on the ground."

It was revealed three police officers were dining at All Happy Family Restaurant at the time of the shooting and were the first on the scene.

"It was loud and busy. Many people in the restaurant didn't hear the shot," a police spokesman said.

Staff at the restaurant told the Sun they didn't hear the shots because they were busy serving food to customers.

"We're always busy, so we don't see what's happening outside," said one of the staff.

The homeless woman said gunplay has become so commonplace in the area that it no longer fazes her.

At last word the shooting victim was recovering in hospital.

Those closely watching Edmonton's crime scene most likely felt a sense of deja vu.

On December 9th, 2007 32-year-old Wing Fung was stabbed to death inside the Garden Bakery and Restaurant. Fung was Edmonton's thirty-third homicide victim of that year.

One man was charged with second-degree murder while another was charged with assault with a weapon. They have yet to go to trial.

Man found dead near downtown

Man found dead near downtown

Homicide detectives were called out to oversee the investigation of a dead body found at the top of the river valley just west of 124th Street on Jasper Avenue, immediately above Victoria Park.

CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image
CBC Edmonton image CBC Edmonton image

At 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, June 12th a person called 911 after spotting the body just off a lane and down a heavily shrubbed slope. The caller suspected the male person was dead and paramedics were dispatched.

After the man was examined by the medical staff, police were called in followed soon by homicide investigators.

CTV Edmonton image Edmonton Journal image

Det. Bill Clark said the man had visible injuries and there was evidence of blood at the scene. The area was taped off affording forensic staff a chance to document the circumstances.

Metro Edmonton image

Early reports from medical examiner Dennis Caufield at the scene indicated the death was non-criminal but police continued to investigate the find as a suspicious death until an autopsy was completed.

On Friday, June 13th police completed their investigation after autopsy results ruled out foul play. The man's name was not released.

River valley residents are no strangers to dead bodies being found.

On September 26th, 2007 police were called by fire personnel about a suspicious fire. They found a smoldering body below a retaining wall behind the Valhalla Condominiums at 11307 99 Avenue. It was immediately determined the man was already dead and the matter was also deemed to be non-criminal.

Sudden death of young woman

During the evening of June 15th, 2008 a woman in her early twenties collapsed on Corbett Fields, a recreation area near the University of Alberta bounded by 113th Street and University Avenue.

The woman's friends tried to revive her but she died before paramedics arrived. Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the suspicious death, however the matter was soon ruled non-criminal.

Rumble behind JP High

Hanging around school after hours is something a half-dozen teens aren't likely to do again anytime soon after they were attacked with pepper spray and beaten with bats and shovels.

Jasper Place High School

It happened just after midnight on June 21st, 2008 behind Jasper Place High School at 8950 163 Street. Three of the teens were pepper sprayed in the eyes and two were hit with a shovel. Injuries were minor and the youths weren't taken to hospital.

“It was dark, obviously, and being attacked with pepper spray in the eyes, they couldn’t get a description,” a police spokesman said. "There was no attempt at robbery.”

A search using police dogs and Air-1 came up empty. Police said the attack was random and they are looking for two male suspects.

Inglewood stabbing

A late-night walk almost turned into the last walk for a man after being slashed and stabbed during an attempted robbery.

At about 2:30 a.m. on June 21st, 2008 the 28-year-old was walking in the area of 112th Avenue and 125th Street when he was approached by three men holding knives.

CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image

After refusing their demand for his valuables the man fled, only to be chased and stabbed multiple times by the three attackers.

CTV Edmonton image

The victim ended up collapsing on the steps of a house at 11217 125 Street. That's where emergency personnel found him and he was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He was last listed in stable condition.

Police brought out a canine unit and Air-1 but no suspects were found. Investigators didn't find the victim cooperative either.

Two other incidents kept police busy overnight.

CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image

A house party near 74th Street and 101st Avenue got some unexpected and unfriendly visitors at about 2:00 a.m.

CTV Edmonton image

"There was an altercation. Several uninvited guests tried to get into the party and they weren't allowed in. One of the suspects stabbed the victim in the back," Cst. Phil Weiss told media.

The man was stabbed several times in the back and police feel the suspect and the victim were known each other. No word of arrests.

At about 3:00 a.m. police were called to the Blue Quill Bar at 326 Saddleback Road after reports came in that a 50-year-old had been stabbed in the chest during an altercation.

The victim ran after his attackers not realising he was stabbed. The suspects drove off before police arrived.

Carjackers strike out

A man took the law into his own hands after two men allegedly shot at his car and then tried to steal it.

CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image
CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image

It was about 1:30 a.m. June 22nd, 2008 when Mark Comey and his wife were driving north up 82nd Street near 113th Avenue when their windows were shot out.

CTV Edmonton image

"All of a sudden the window shatters. Thankfully my wife was was looking at me so she didn't get glass in her face.

"I stopped the car – there's two guys yelling and stuff ... one of them fires a couple of shots. It ends up one has a pellet gun and the other's got a starter. They are a couple of wannabe gangsters," Comey said.

Sizing up his chances, Comey decided to go after them with a baseball bat.

"I wasn't going to go two on one, I was going to even the odds with a baseball bat and then all of a sudden even though they had a pellet gun, and a gun, they are not so tough," he said. "They are cowards at heart."

After taking a few practice swings, Comey said one of the men jumped into the front seat and put a gun to his wife's face. She was not seriously injured, but did suffer minor cuts when car's window were shattered.

"I am just thankful that police are going to catch them first because they are not worth me going to jail," said Comey.

No arrests were made. Police searched the area and found a pellet gun.

"We'll probably send it up to forensics and see if we get any fingerprints off it," Watch Commander Daryl Mahoney said.

A beef and a pineapple

A beating was on the menu at a fast food outlet after a group of people were attacked with pepper spray after making faces at some folks waiting in the drive-through lane.

The offended pair picked up their take out and then took their beef (or more likely, chicken) inside, offering the facemakers some condiments in the form of pepper spray, a couple of punches and a kick or two.

Police were called to the dust-up at the Burger King at 17215 Stony Plain Road about 7:00 p.m. June 22nd, 2008.

By then the two men had fled in a vehicle, but another diner was able to serve the officers a license plate.

The fire department was called in to disperse the pepper spray cloud with large fans and one person was decontaminated by paramedics.

Viacheslav Aronov, 22, was charged with assault. Aleksandr Aronov, 19, was charged with assault and assault with a weapon. Time will tell if a judge will come up with some just desserts if he has it his way.

A few hours later a woman in Mill Woods found what old soldiers used to call a "pineapple."

Doing some yard work around her house near 23rd Avenue and 66th Street, the gardener came across a grenade – and a live one to boot.

Having little experience in ordinace handling, she took the device to police at the nearby south division headquarters for some advice. Speaking to officers through an intercom, she told them what she brought with her.

Police told her to back off, politely, and to put the device on the ground.

The bomb squad dropped by and confirmed the item was a recently-issued grenade still inside its Canadian Army can-shaped shipping container.

Disposal of the device was taken care of at the Edmonton Garrison by Canadian Forces personnel who, with Edmonton police, are investigating the matter.

Stabbing outside detox centre

Shortly after midnight June 26th, 2008 emergency services were called to the George Spady Centre, located at 10015 105A Avenue, after a man was stabbed in the throat.

CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image

When police arrived they found the injured man and another man, being held by witnesses, who allegedly had a weapon with him – a double-bladed knife.

CTV Edmonton image

"The injured male has been transported to the hospital with undetermined injuries at this point. The male suspect has been taken into custody and is in the process of being dealt with," Acting Sgt. Glen Klose told media.

The victim was taken to the nearby Royal Alexandra Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. No word on charges.

Ex-con celebrates freedom by running from police

At around 11:30 p.m. June 27th, 2008 police were called to a disturbance at the Vinyl Lounge at 107th Street and Jasper Avenue.

CTV Edmonton image

As they were sorting out what took place, one man fled the scene on foot. He was captured after a short foot chase and as they were dealing with him he gave them a false name ... and the slip.

Police again pursued the man on foot, finally catching and cuffing him.

Once they figured out who he was they learned that he had been released from the Drumheller Institute earlier that day where he had served time for armed robbery.

Bryan Clinton Farrell, 20, was charged with obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest, escaping lawful custody, and a breach of release conditions.

It's likely Farrell won't be getting back into Vinyl, or any other club, anytime soon.

Angry dispute makes man trigger-happy

At about 2:30 a.m. on June 28th, 2008 in an alley just south of Whyte Avenue near 104th Street, a young couple's public display of dis-affection caught the attention of some passersby.

CTV Edmonton image

Fearing things might turn ugly, the five attempted to assist the woman by stepping in.

It seems the act by the Good Samaritans wasn't appreciated by the boyfriend. He went to his car, grabbed a gun, returned to the area and pointed it at the folks to make sure they knew who wore the pants in the relationship.

The bystanders wisely retreated and police were called. The man put the gun back in the car and a couple of his friends then drove the vehicle away.

For some reason, they returned the car to the Old Strathcona area and abandoned it. Police found the car, searched it and discovered a loaded weapon.

Stephen Shawn Fortier, 25, was charged with numerous firearms-related charges including possession of stolen property (the firearm was reported stolen).

Another Whyte Avenue stabbing

Four people out for a late night stroll to beat the heat soon found one of their own taking a beating.

The incident occured when the men were walking east along Whyte Avenue near 96th Street on June 29th, 2008 when a fight broke out. What started out as fisticuffs turned serious when one man allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed another man.

CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image

Leaving a trail of blood on the pavement, the victim crawled to a nearby liquor store where he asked for help. He was taken to University of Alberta Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

The suspects, all wearing blue jeans and white T-shirts, fled the scene.

CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image

Police have little in the way of details about the altercation, but Insp. Brian Lobay said the summer's a busy time of year on Whyte Avenue and all sorts of people come out.

CTV Edmonton image

"It would be nice if everyone just left their weapons at home," Lobay said.

Police are looking for a couple of suspects in their 20s.

No shirt and no pants catches police attention

When ne'er-do-wells disrobe while committing their deeds, it's another indication that the summer heat was getting to people.

Police responded to calls about a shirtless man at about 1:00 a.m. on June 29th, 2008. He had been running through a neighbourhood in the area of 79th Street and 98th Avenue, climbing on parked cars and trying to break into garages.

By the time police caught up with him he had changed his appearance ... and was no longer wearing pants.

Taking no chances in case of concealed weapons, police brought in Air-1 along with Const. Glen Thursby and police service dog Sisco. Together they found the man hiding in tall weeds at the rear of a yard.

Christopher Justin Jervis, 20, was charged with trespassing and public intoxication.

Smith & Wesson calling

Residents of a suspected drug house near 112th Avenue and 95th Street got a wake up call June 30th, 2008 as bullets burst through their living room window.

No one was injured in the 1:30 a.m. shooting and no one seems to be co-operating as police continue their investigation.

At the least, residents of the home have another open window as the city enjoys the heat wave.

Found: Roy Berg

Late on June 16th, 2008 RCMP announced that Roy Berg had been located – relatively safe and sound.

Berg was found by volunteer searchers in the Ministik Lake Bird Sanctuary approximately 5 kilometres from his daughter's residence shortly after 9:00 p.m.

The 81-year-old was taken to the University of Alberta Hospital via STARS air ambulance as a precaution. He was found conscious and may be suffering from dehydration. An RCMP statement indicated Berg's injuries were not considered life threatening.

Strathcona County RCMP had requested the public's assistance in locating Berg who suffers from Alzheimers.

Roy Berg

He was last seen 9:00 p.m. on June 14th, 2008 walking near his daughter's residence located close to Township Road 510 and Range Road 210, 30 kilometres southeast of Sherwood Park.

An extensive ground and air search took place drawing on resources from forty members of the Strathcona County RCMP, the RCMP Police Dog Service, the Edmonton Police Service Air-1 helicopter, Edmonton Regional Search and Rescue and the Canadian Search Dog Association.

Roy Berg map

The area searched was heavily wooded and included the Ministik Lake Game Bird Sanctuary.

CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image

Family members said Berg created seven kilometres of trail on property he once owned in the area.

CTV Edmonton image

"There's a lot of water, a lot of slough area around here, and very dense bush," RCMP Cst. Gord Canning told media, adding search dogs hadn't picked up any significant trails.

CTV Edmonton image

"He knows the area but he would get disoriented when he gets anxious and upset. That would make it more difficult and he may get turned around and go the wrong way," said Berg's son-in-law, Ron Ball.

"We're hoping that they'll just find him and he just went the wrong way somewhere."

A father of four, Berg was a former University of Alberta professor who began working there in 1955. He became dean of agriculture and forestry in 1983 and retired in 1988.

Berg's work involved genetic research which led to better quality beef, with his mixed-breed cattle being once termed “Berg bastards.”

The man was also a member of the Ministik Lake Bird Sanctuary.

"He was always a long-time supporter of the morraine and an avid birder and naturalist," Glen Lawrence, a neighbour and Strathcona County councillor, told the Edmonton Sun.

Berg sold his acreage to his son-in-law in 2002 and moved to Sherwood Park. Despite deteriorating health, the acreage was still an area he felt comfortable in, Ron Ball said.

"He knows the place, knows the area. Although he does have Alzheimer's and does get confused, he doesn't normally get confused here because he knows the place so well. We don't understand what could have happened."

On June 16th RCMP announced their ground search of the area had been completed with negative results. A search was conducted from the air with no sign of Berg being discovered.

The next day dive teams were to be brought in to search several bodies of water near where Berg was last seen. There were no strong indications Berg had fallen into one of the many sloughs that dot the land, and the dive process was required as part of a thorough and complete investigation, RCMP said.

However, late in the evening of the 16th RCMP announced that Roy Berg had been located – relatively safe and sound.

Berg was found by a family friend and relative lying beside one of the buildings of the U of A Research Facility located in the Ministik Lake Bird Sanctuary, approximately 5 kilometres from his daughter's residence shortly after 9:00 p.m.

CTV Edmonton image

"Mild hypothermia, a little bit dehydrated ... other than that, he's in good condition considering what he's gone through," was how Stewart Martin of Strathcona County Emergency Services summed up the man's condition.

The senior was taken to the University of Alberta Hospital via STARS air ambulance as a precaution. He was later transferred to the Royal Alexandria Hospital.

Found: Almerio Tomac

Edmonton police requested the public's assistance in locating 86-year-old Almerio Tomac, an Alberta Hospital patient.

Almerio Toma

Tomac was last seen in the psychiatric hospital's secure wing on the morning of June 18th, 2008. Staff checked the area but could not find him. Police say Tomac withdrew cash from two downtown banks shortly after he was found missing.

He was described as 5-feet 5-inches and has short white hair. He was wearing a blue sweater and black pants when last seen.

Tomac, who has an Italian accent, is familiar with the downtown area. His image was captured on a bank security camera a day after his disappearance.

"He's not a threat to anybody but he's supposed to be getting treatment," said a police spokesman, noting Tomac requires prescription medications.

Just how Tomac got out of the hospital is still being investigated.

Rob Stevenson, a spokesman for Capital Health, said the senior was relatively new to the hospital and normally stayed in a building that houses geriatric mental health patients.

Alberta Hospital

The unit is not a secure one, and its main doors are unlocked during the day. Somehow Tomac slipped past medical personnel who were busy with some of the 20 to 25 other patients in the ward.

"He's not a danger to himself or a danger to others," Stevenson said. "We're very concerned about the danger not taking his medications poses to himself."

It was reported that Tomac's medication was for a physical condition that could present problems the longer he is away from hospital. Privacy regulations prevent specifics from being disclosed.

"The concern is only to get him back in treatment for his own good," said Steve Buick, another spokesman for Capital Health.

Regarding the man's stay at the hospital, Buick was reassuring.

"It's not a case where he was restricted to hospital because of any safety concerns to anybody else," he said.

On June 20th Tomac had made his way to Swift Current, Saskatchewan where he ended up in a hospital.

By late afternoon June 22nd he left the facility, turning up the next day in Moose Jaw where he received additional medical treatment.

Nabbed: Michael Matthew Campbell

Edmonton police were on the hunt for Michael Matthew Campbell after a pregnant woman was sexually assaulted in north Edmonton shortly after 11:00 p.m. on June 4th, 2008.

Michael Matthew Campbell

A 20-year-old woman, who was nine-months pregnant, was walking home and pushing her one-year-old son in a stroller in the area of 36th Street and 139th Avenue when a man approached her.

The man exposed himself, pushed the woman up against a wall, and then fondled her. She fought back, kicked the man in the groin, escaped and called police.

A police spokesman said the woman was very shaken up but has no long-lasting physical effects. The one-year-old was not touched during the assault.

A warrant was then issued for Campbell, 20 years of age and described as 5-feet 2-inches, 125 lbs with black hair and blue eyes. Campbell was known to police.

On June 7th, at about 5:00 p.m., police were tipped off that Campbell was at 101st Street and 102nd Avenue.

He was arrested and charged with indecent exposure, threats causing death/bodily harm, sexual assault, resisting a peace officer, and escaping lawful custody.

After Campbell noticed approaching officers, he allegedly struggled with police and fled, only to be arrested a short distance later.

Nabbed: Marcel Perrot

It has been said that with the price of vehicles these days you almost need to rob a bank to be able to afford one.

On June 17th, 2008 it was alleged that Marcel Perrot took that observation quite seriously – either that or he was too cheap to supply his own getaway car.

The shenanigans all started when a man walked into the Crosstown Chrysler car dealership and asked to take a new black Dodge Ram truck out for a test drive.

The man drove the vehicle for a short while and then told the salesman who was with him that he needed to stop off at a bank and get some money so he could pay for the new wheels.

CBC Edmonton image CBC Edmonton image

After making a brief stop at the TD Canada Trust Bank at 111th Avenue and Groat Road, the man got back in the truck and told the salesman he wanted to show it to someone in Sherwood Park.

Despite the salesman repeatedly telling the man to slow down, he sped along Highway 16 eastbound to a gas station near the Lakeland Trailer Park.

CBC Edmonton image

Something raised the suspicions of the car salesman, and as soon as the man left the truck to go into the gas station, he grabbed the keys and called 911. The would-be truck buyer realised what was going on and fled.

Edmonton police and Strathcona RCMP searched the trailer park without success.

As it turns out, the salesman's hunch was right.

Bank robbery suspect Bank robbery suspect

While inside the bank, the man had asked for a loan – a permanent one – by issuing a teller a demand note for some cold hard cash.

Edmonton police robbery detectives took one look at the bank's surveillance tapes and said "Now there's a familiar face" and started looking for 40-year-old Marcel Perrot.

Marcel Perrot

Perrot was described as a Metis male, approximately 6-feet 1-inch tall, 230 lbs with brown hair and brown eyes. He sports several tattoos including a unicorn on his right shoulder, a dragon and panther on his left shoulder, and a serpent on his upper right arm.

A larger image of Marcel Perrot can be seen here. A larger image of the bank robbery suspect can be seen here.

Media interviewed the Crosstown Chrsyler car salesman, Roger Jean, who recounted what happened after the stop at the bank.

CBC Edmonton image

"And a few minutes later he came out and got into the truck. He was breathing a little bit heavily."

CBC Edmonton image

"Within minutes I saw a little bit of cardboard here popping out his T-shirt with notes on it. And I said to myself 'Well this guy has just robbed the bank.'

"He stopped at a gas station and he told me he was going to be in and out of there in a few minutes. So at that time I took the keys out of the vehicle, locked it and walked away," Jean said.

When he made the call, Jean felt sorry for the man and found it sad that someone was so desperate they had to rob a bank.

As they were driving around, the two had got to chatting "very friendly like." The man talked about his family and a life in and out of prison. He took off his sun glasses.

"You could see in his face the sadness. I think at that point he regretted what he had done. I feel bad for him. I feel bad for his family."

Throughout the adventure he that called "the ultimate show," Jean said he remained calm.

"I never thought for a minute that he had a gun or a weapon. I don't think he's a bad person at the end of the day.

"It takes an awful lot to scare me. That's just the way I am."

Asked if he would have tried to convince the man to surrender, Jean shook his head.

"But it's not my job. I sell cars.

“I didn't know who I was dealing with. There are a lot of cuckoos out there, especially in Edmonton.”

An eagle-eyed citizen spotted Marcel Perrot walking down Whyte Avenue two days after the test drive.

Police arrested Perrot at the corner of 102nd Street and Whyte Avenue without incident. At last word, police were interviewing the man and charges were pending.

The citizen who called police said he recognised Perrot from extensive media coverage.

Surrendered: Allan Dale Plamondon

Edmonton police issued a warning to the public to be on the lookout for Allan Dale Plamondon.

Allan Dale Plamondon

Plamondon, 49, failed to show up for a scheduled meeting with police detectives and an arrest warrant was issued.

Police indicated he's a high risk sexual offender who targets girls and is under conditions not to be in areas where kids are likely to be found. Authorities believed he poses a risk of significant harm to the community.

Plamondon was the subject of a warning issued by a school in December 2007.

Aldergrove School, at 8525 182 Street, was notified by Edmonton police after detectives learned Plamondon was re-locating to the city. The school then notified parents.

After his release from the Edmonton Remand Centre, Plamondon initially moved to Alcomdale, 40 km northwest of Edmonton. He had served a nine-month sentence for two counts of sexual assault.

Plamondon later turned himself in and remains in custody. Police credited widespread media exposure for Plamondon surrendering.
