Police arrived at the 10th-floor unit of the Sir William Place complex, 8830 85 Street, at 9:24 a.m. on April 21st, 2008.

Investigators initially treated the death as suspicious with homicide detectives assisting in the matter.

Police did not indicate why the death was considered suspicious. Paramedics who attended did not want to disturb the scene and instead called in police. It was not known who had initially called emergency services.

Investigators didn't say if the mother was being questioned or if she was in the suite when the baby was found. Also not released was the gender of the infant.

Tenants told media that a couple in their mid-30s had moved in about a month earlier – and that the woman did not look pregnant. Sir William Place is an adults-only building.

A neighbour in the suite below reported hearing a loud bang at about 6:00 a.m.

Forensic staff remained on site well into the evening.

An autopsy conducted the next day determined the baby's death to be non-criminal. No other details were given.

The most recent case involving an infant in Edmonton took place on March 19th, 2008 when a man discovered a baby wrapped in grocery bags under a bed in a basement suite. A 20-year-old woman was charged with committing an indignity to a dead human body, neglecting to obtain assistance in childbirth and concealing the body of a child.

Public alert: Larry Maxwell Stanford

A man who completed a 35-year sentence for hijacking an aircraft and attempted murder has been released into the community in Edmonton and police consider him to be a violent offender who continues to pose a risk of significant harm.

Larry Maxwell Stanford

Larry Maxwell Stanford, 56, was convicted of hijacking Quebecair flight QB321 on December 14th, 1972. He was 21 years old at the time. Stanford was sentenced to 20 years in prison and was released on parole in March 1982.

On July 8th, 1983, Stanford attacked his sister in Gander, Newfoundland, hitting her multiple times in the head with a hammer and causing serious brain injury. He was convicted of attempted murder in 1984 and sentenced to 15 years in prison, consecutive to the original 20.

On April 25th, 2008 Stanford appeared in an Edmonton Provincial courtroom to sign a one-year peace bond application sought by Crown prosecutor Lorrie Van Dyke.

Telling the judge he found the terms of the order acceptable Stanford said, "I just want to sign the paperwork."

Outside court, Det. Doug MacLeod of the Edmonton police high-risk offenders unit said Stanford was convicted of "very serious offences," including a "particularly brutal" attack on his sister.

"We believe that he is a high risk to re-offend in the community," said MacLeod.

The peace bond requires Stanford to report to MacLeod weekly and inform authorities of his living and transportation arrangements. He must tell police if he changes his appearance and if he begins a relationship with a woman, whom police will inform of his violent past.

Stanford, who represented himself in court, must also stay out of bars and refrain from drinking and using drugs. He cannot carry weapons.

MacLeod said Stanford wanted to live in Edmonton because that's where his parents are. It was reported he had moved into a neighbourhood in the northeast.

Stanford was described as a white male, 5-feet 7-inches (170 cm), 140 lbs (63 kg) with brown eyes and brown hair.

A larger image of Stanford can be seen here.
