Guns and gangs grip mid-winter Edmonton

At a time when most Edmontonians were dealing with one of the coldest winters in a decade, Edmonton police were dealing with one of the most violent spells in recent memory.

January 2008 found authorities investigating numerous drive-by shootings and incidents of gang-related violence – while at the same time facing a wall of silence from possible witnesses and the public at large.

The matter came to a head when the Metro Edmonton Gang Unit called a press conference to calm citizen fears – and express the frustration of police efforts to quell a growing wave of gang-related violence » full details »

Police deal with mystery woman

On February 1st, 2008 officers were called to the corner of 28th Avenue and Hewes Way when a report of a body in a field came in.

Investigators treated the woman's death as non-criminal based on preliminary autopsy results that are waiting for toxicology tests to determine the exact cause.

Police hit a brick wall when it came to putting a name to the woman as she was not carrying any identification. Photographs of clothing and a description of the woman were released.

On February 7th police announced the body had been identified as a 51-year-old Edmonton woman. Family was notified, and as foul play was not suspected, the death was no longer a police matter.

Police probe suspicious death

Police investigated the suspicious death of a woman found at about 3:20 a.m. on February 4th, 2008 in a home near 108th Street and 40th Avenue.

The woman, in her forties, was in apparently good health before she died. Circumstances surrounding the discovery were not first released but it was later reported the woman was found by her husband.

Homicide detectives assisted in the investigation as the death was sudden and without explanation. Police simply labelled the matter as "suspicious."

Results from an autopsy released February 6th revealed the woman died of natural causes. The woman's name was not released. The death was officially classed as non-criminal.
