Police and emergency medical personnel arrived and quickly determined the 61-year-old man was the cab's driver and he had been beaten by his fare. Within 35 minutes a man approached one of the police cars and got into the back seat.

Unknown to police at the time, Stephanie Rae Butler lay dead inside her house. Her body was discovered by her father the next day when Stephanie's husband Michael asked the man to check on her welfare.

Forensic investigators were at the home most of the day and an autopsy was scheduled for April 30th to determine if the death was criminal in nature.

A police spokesman couldn't confirm the age of the individual, but the Edmonton Sun spoke to neighbours who said police told them the man was 39 years old.

Those neighbours also told the Sun the house was a home for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts.

“There are four guys, sometimes five, living there,” said one woman. “They come and go. They don’t bother me.”

According to a search of land title records, the Oxford House Foundation of Canada was listed as the owner of home.

In 2001, the Foundation was funded by the Edmonton Housing Trust Fund to buy three homes for use as long-term housing for persons recovering from addictions.

No one from the Foundation office in Calgary was available for comment.

On April 28th homicide detectives determined the man's death was "non-criminal" and his fatal injuries were self-inflicted.
