Nine stabbed in separate incidents over Family Day weekend

The Family Day long weekend saw Edmonton police responding to numerous incidents of violence at locations across the city.

A homicide, the fifth of the year, started the weekend off early in the morning of Friday, February 16th, 2007.

Later, at around 9:00 p.m., police were called to the Alberta Avenue/Norwood area after reports of a man found stabbed came in.

A man, who appeared to be in his 20s, was found bleeding outside a duplex at 11730 95A Street. He was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital with a serious stab wound to the stomach.

"It was fairly deep – they are concerned about it. He has been rushed up to surgery," said city police Insp. Dan Jones at the scene. The man was later reported to be in stable condition and was expected to survive. A woman in her early 20s was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A 17-year-old male young offender was arrested near the duplex and was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

The warm late-winter weekend got hotter for police as they responded to a double stabbing at a locale well known to them.

At 2:00 a.m. on Febuary 17th they tended to a fight between two groups of people outside the Y Afterhours club at 102nd Street and 100th Avenue.

A 21-year-old man was stabbed multiple times while a 17-year-old male was stabbed once. Both were taken to hospital where they were expected to recover from their injuries. Police said the victims were not being cooperative and no charges were laid.

The club was the scene of a serious incident on November 19th, 2006.

A 23-year-old man suffered a stab wound to the back that punctured his lung after refusing to hand over his cellphone. Police had trouble getting to the man as a crowd wouldn’t move away when asked. Pepper spray was used to disperse the mob.

A 15-year-old male was charged with assault and two breaches of condition. A 17-year-old male was charged with assault, possession for the purpose of trafficking (ecstacy), and two breaches of condition.

At 8:45 p.m. on Febuary 17th, a man walked into an Alberta Avenue bar and ordered an ambulance.

An employee at the pub, near 114 Avenue and 95 Street, said a man in his late 20s walked in holding the back of his neck. The man had packed some snow over his wound, which was believed to be minor.

The action then moved to Edmonton's west end when police first received a call from the West Edmonton Mall Fever nightclub at 2:35 a.m. early February 19th.

Three men were stabbed with knives while a fourth man was stabbed in the back with a broken bottle.

All four were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Detectives were checking mall security video as part of their investigation and cautiously reported they identified a handful of suspects.

Forty-five minutes later, police and paramedics were called to the Gingur Sky nightclub at 15505 118 Avenue for a report of a double stabbing.

Two men were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening stab wounds and police said they were being “less than co-operative” with investigators.

No charges were laid but several suspects were identified by witnesses.

The stabbings ocurred despite the presence of two special duty Edmonton Police Service officers.

“We’ve already had one homicide there,” Insp. Jamie Ewatski noted, referring to gunplay at the club that killed Varnado Stobbs on October 6th, 2006.

“It was a very, very busy night,” Ewatski reflected.

Disconnecting the cable guy

An incident in northeast Edmonton proved once again that the worksite can be a dangerous place – even when it's thirty feet up in the air. Either that or it was an example of a customer service complaint that got way out of hand.

Cable guys have never been very popular, and Shaw service technician Paul Limoges has likely heard his share of static. But what he wasn't used to hearing on the job was the sound of a gun being channelled in his direction.

CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image CTV Edmonton image

"All of a sudden I heard a shot and felt something hitting the truck."

"I wasn't too sure what it was. As I turned around I saw a guy aiming a rifle or a gun or something at me through his patio door on the second floor."

What was first thought to be a bullet had struck Limoges' aerial bucket while he was attending to a line near 111th Avenue and 83rd Street just before noon on February 21st, 2007.

"He fired another shot. That's when I ducked into my bucket, ducked down, got to ground and called the police."

Edmonton's finest took no chances and called out their emergency response team.

"We established a perimeter and we utilised our tactical members to come in," Insp. Jamie Ewatski told the media.

"We simply made a phone call and the people who were inside the suite complied with our direction and right now we have a gentleman in custody in relation to this incident."

It turns out the weapon was a long-barrelled pellet rifle.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man and charged him with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Chances are his TV reception won't improve much once he's inside the crowbar hotel.

46-year-old Richard Craig Vanderwerff was released after serving 304 days in jail for "sexual offences involving children."

After his conviction, he was released on bail pending his sentencing and ordered to stay away from parks, playgrounds, pools or other places kids may gather.

Soon after, residents of a Bonnie Doon apartment block learned Vanderwerff had been in their building, where his ex-girlfriend lived, right after he was convicted.

The building was next to an elementary school, near the Bonnie Doon pool and was home to several families with kids.

Vanderwerff was released from the remand centre on February 4th, 2007.
