A call came in that a man was found bleeding on the street along the western fringe of Edmonton's Chinatown district at about 2:45 a.m. December 9th, 2007 after an altercation took place between customers of the bakery. Police said they knew who the victim was but weren't releasing his name pending notification of next of kin.

"Basically what we have is a dispute between two gentlemen in the restaurant that became a fight," Insp. Howie McAnn told media at the scene.

"One of the gentlemen produced a knife and we believe one of the gentlemen was stabbed in the back."

There were indications the 32-year-old victim died shortly after arriving at hospital.

Insp. Terry Rocchio later addressed reporters at a press conference.

"Upon arrival they found that a man had been assaulted. He was transported to hospital by EMS and subsequently he was pronounced dead.

“It's another homicide and we're talking to a number of witnesses who were in the cafe at the time.

"There's a few people in the restaurant that they have been interviewing. We're still talking to witnesses and trying to determine what caused the actual altercation.

“So far, there's no indication of gang or drug involvement and the witnesses are cooperating.”

Rocchio backtracked from earlier statements that indicated the man had been stabbed, saying now they were withholding the cause of death for investigative purposes.

CTV Edmonton found a man who was on the street at the time of the murder. Rob Pruden was panhandling near the bakery when the altercation began and he told the station what he heard one man say about another.

"I sit right beside the restaurant and when it happened they were three doors down from me. He says 'I'm gonna smash that guy'," Pruden said.

"Then he went into Garden Bakery and half-an-hour later the ambulance came and they brought the guy out and he was supposedly dead."

CTV's news cameras caught up with two men familiar with the downtown core.

"In this neighbourhood it's starting to become more open. It's becoming really scary here," said Ken Flynn, the man wearing a hat.

"More community watch or more police would help," were the solutions offered by another man.

When asked of Edmonton's recent upturn in homicides (six in four weeks) Insp. Rocchio said the violence has kept detectives putting in long hours.

“It's been an extremely busy month and our members are working hard to follow up on these cases,” he said.

Police worked quickly on the case, announcing on December 12th, 2007 that two men had been arrested and charged with the murder of 32-year-old Wing Fung (pictured above).

Kenneth Ian Lunty had been arrested the night before and was charged with second-degree murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Quy Nguyen was arrested the previous day and charged with assault with a weapon and possession of an offensive weapon.

An autopsy conducted indicated Fung died of a stab wound.

Police said the murder weapon had not been found and they believe Fung's death was not gang or drug-related.

A spokesman said the men accused and the victim either knew each other or knew of each other. As for motive, even though police know why the fight started they declined to comment leaving the court process to shed more light on the incident.

The two men accused were previously not known to police. Neither was Fung, who was said to be living with his parents in Edmonton's west end.
