Edmonton police homicide detectives and the Correctional Service of Canada are investigating the death of a 42-year-old Edmonton Institution inmate.

Reginald Dale Gogerla was sent to the maximum security facility on June 20th, 2006 to serve a two-year, three-month sentence.

He was convicted of causing a disturbance, dangerous driving, theft over $5,000, hit and run, failure to remain at the scene of a crime, disqualified driving, failure to hold a valid operator’s license and failure to appear.

On June 23rd an ambulance was called to the Insitution when Gogerla fell ill. He was transported to the Grey Nuns Hospital after resisting medical treatment by nurses at the prison.

While en-route, he stopped breathing. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Grey Nuns Hospital.

Edmonton Institution acting assistant warden Jim MacKenzie said Gogerla showed symptoms caused by a medical condition he wouldn’t name.

Kevin Grabowsky, prairie region president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, expressed concern for his members.

"I guess he'd been sick or had medical problems a few days beforehand. It's a mystery right now. We just want to make sure he wasn't contagious or anything like that."

An autopsy was set to determine cause of death.

A homicide investigator was assigned because the case was considered an in-custody death.
