Brian William Marsh, 49, was stabbed January 7th, 2006. He died January 28th, 2006.
Colette Margarette Yatchotay, 20, and Beryl Rita Scotty, 27, were charged with manslaughter and possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public.
It was a Saturday night, and at about 7 in the evening Brian Marsh had the luck to bump into two women on the street.
For whatever reason, Marsh invited the pair to his suite in the Butte Apartment rooming house at 10434 95 Street.
Something happened between the three and the next thing anybody knew was that police were called to attend to a man who had been assaulted and stabbed.
Marsh was unconscious and suffering from multiple stab wounds when emergency workers arrived at 7:45 p.m. He was transported to hospital with life threatening injuries.
Marsh remained in serious condition in hospital until he died on January 28th, 2006.
An autopsy was completed two days later and the Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the man died as a result of injuries sustained during the assault.
On the night of the assault, police located and charged Colette Yatchotay and Beryl Scotty with aggravated assault and possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public.
On May 16th, 2006 police deemed Marsh's death a homicide and upgraded the assault charges against the women to manslaughter.
Marsh's death brought Edmonton's 2006 homicide record to seven.
Police gave no reason as to why they delayed the manslaughter charges for almost four months. The two women had been in custody since being charged in January.
The two-storey rooming house where the assault took place was later boarded up and condemned by Capital Health.
