At 1:20 a.m., two police officers cruising central downtown were near the end of their shift when a man flagged them down stating, "There is something wrong with my friend."

Police then spotted the body of a man lying in an alley south of 107 Avenue near 96 Street. Homicide detectives taped off a large crime scene as they tracked a blood trail at half-a-block long from where the body was found.

Police figured the man may have been dead for several hours before being discovered. They also say there was visible trauma to his neck indicative of a beating along with a lot of blood in the alley where he was found.

The victim was identified by police as Jason Anthony Kaye, age 28. While they have not officially released the cause of the man's death police are terming it Edmonton's third homicide of the year. A preliminary medical examiner report indicated Kaye's wounds are consistent with a beating.

Kaye was described as a "red-headed computer whiz" who re-sold computer parts found in dumpsters. He was born in Bermuda, spent time in the Queen Charlotte Islands, on Salt Spring Island, and in Calgary and Edmonton.

Kaye was employed as a pipefitter and a short-order cook but lately struggled with alcoholism. There was a suggestion that Kaye had recently gotten involved in the drug trade.

Kaye's sister Cheryl operates Jay's Porch Monkeys, a web site dedicated to Jason. She also operates her own web site that posts thoughts about her family's loss.
