Police Line: Do Not Cross

It started as an alcohol-fuelled fight between two brothers. It ended with one dead and the other charged with manslaughter.

A 12:51 a.m. 911 call on March 7th, 2006 brought emergency crews to a townhouse at 108 Greenwood Village in Sherwood Park. A caller reported that a man had stopped breathing.

First responders found the older Carmichael in need of immediate medical care but soon pronounced him dead at the scene.

One man was taken into custody but was not immediately charged. Police waited for autopsy results released later in the day before determining Carmichael's death a homicide.

Police then charged Patrick Dale Carmichael with manslaughter. He made a brief appearance in provincial court on March 8th and was released on $10,000 bail.

Carmichael was scheduled to appear in Sherwood Park Provincial Court April 5th, 2006.

Carmen Carmichael lived in the townhouse with two brothers. The three had moved from Nova Scotia earlier this year and found work with a local construction company.

Residents of the complex described the trio as "quiet, courteous and clean." One neighbour said other than occasional loud music, the men had been fairly quiet since moving in about two months ago.

Another neighbour said he heard "stomping, banging and yelling" coming from the townhouse around midnight, lasting about five to ten minutes. An earlier media report suggested that seven other people were in the condo at the time of Carmichael's death.

The initial investigation indicated the two brothers were drinking alcohol when an argument broke out between them. After a brief physical confrontation, the older Carmichael bother stopped breathing and the other brother called 911, police said. No weapons were used.

Carmichael's death was Sherwood Park's first homicide of 2006 and the eighth murder of the year in the Edmonton metro area.

In 2005, the bedroom community recorded two murders -- including the sensational death of teen Shane Rolston, who was attacked by five 18-year-olds at a house party.

Patrick Dale Carmichael pleaded guilty earlier in 2006 to the manslaughter of his brother. Details of the trial were not published by Edmonton media.

On October 17th, 2006 Carmichael was given an 18-month conditional sentence with a lifetime firearms prohibition.

Patrick Dale Carmichael was able serve the sentence in the community.
