Cody Aaron Bull, 28, was stabbed to death September 9th, 2006.

Jolie Amy Panegyuk, 29, was charged with second-degree murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

September 9th, 2006 marked the deadliest day on Edmonton streets in the city's criminal history. Never had the city recorded three murders in less than 24 hours.

At 12:30 a.m. police were first called to the three-storey Saxon Manor apartment building at 10211 156 Street after neighbours complained of yelling coming from a suite.

At 12:55 a.m. police were called to a nearby Domo gas station on Stony Plain Road. Early reports varied, but either two teenaged girls and/or a man had come in saying a person was seriously hurt with a stab wound.

Between those calls, someone had phoned police and suggested that a man had died after suffering a self-inflicted wound.

Subsequent investigation led police to believe all three calls related to a 28-year-old man found bleeding on the pavement in front of Saxon Manor.

The man had staggered outside the building and collapsed near the sidewalk.

He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead of apparent knife wounds.

Homicide detectives investigated a second floor suite they said was a possible crime scene. It was there they found a lone female.

Police said the attack didn't appear to be a random act, and they were interested in talking to two native males who were seen fleeing west across 156th Street. A knife was recovered at the scene.

630 CHED Radio reported September 11th that homicide detectives had a person of interest in "investigative custody," but no charges had been laid.

The Edmonton Journal reported that two men seen leaving the area were questioned by police and released. They were not expected to face charges.

Area residents said the building had often been the scene of disputes and drug-related incidents.

An autopsy performed on the man September 12th, 2006 confirmed his identity as Cody Aaron Bull of Duffield, Alberta. He died from a single stab wound to the chest.

On October 10th, 2006 police charged Bull's common-law wife in connection with his death.

Jolie Amy Panegyuk, 29, was charged with second-degree murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Panegyuk was set to appear in court October 11th.

Bull was a resident of Paul Band, 44 kilometres west of Edmonton.

The father of three was described by his first cousin Whitney Bull as "a very smart, intelligent, brilliant guy. He always had a smile on his face no matter what the situation was."

"I wouldn't know who would do this or why they would do this. There's a killer out there and nobody's safe," he told the Edmonton Sun.

Two hours after Bull's stabbing came word that John Albert Buckniak had been knifed in an east Edmonton park.

Before the day was over, Lily Duong aka Lily Tran died in a drive-by shooting that took place at Argyll Road and 76th Avenue at about 11:30 p.m.

The three September 9th deaths were the city's 19th, 20th and 21st homicides of the year.

EPS Chief Mike Boyd

Speaking to the media later in the day, Chief Mike Boyd said he was concerned with the sudden level of violence.

"We need to all be concerned in our community. But you know Edmonton is a safe city ... I think we've gone four or five weeks now without a single homicide," he said.

"(But) one homicide is one homicide too many as far as I'm concerned. We need help to solve these crimes -- we need to help the victims find justice."

Edmonton mayor Stephen Mandel said the day's flurry of killings was a statistical aberration.

"Hopefully, this isn't any kind of a new trend and police will move ahead and solve these and get on with ensuring that our people feel safe," Mandel said.

"The chief hasn't given me any reason in our discussions to think there's any more violence on the horizon."

Bull's cousin, 20-year-old Edward Bone was murdered July 31st, 2007 near Beaver Hills Park in downtown Edmonton.

Bone was stabbed to death, becoming the city's nineteenth homicide of that year.
