Before Michael White's murder trial got underway, Edmonton police scooted around to 630 CHED to drop off a search warrant. Detectives wanted my notes and material related to the White murder case.


Damn. Someone snitched to the police that I'd been talking with Michael White.


The radio station wanted me to hand over everything to the police, but I hired a lawyer who did media work for the CBC and the Edmonton Journal to oppose this.


We won.


Later, in the Law Courts Building, I confronted Provincial Court Judge Peter M. Caffaro. Caffaro had signed the search warrant.


"Peter," I said, "you signed a search warrant on me ... what are you doing?" The judge denied it.


"You did," I said.


"No, I didn't."


"Yes, you did ... it had to do with Michael White."


That rang a bell. Caffaro then recalled he had signed some warrants – and one had to do with Michael White.


I told Judge Caffaro not to worry about it.


It's my hope judges don't sign off on these warrants – trusting the police completely – the way I sign off on my Big Bucks at 7-11.
