Todd Stevenson, 40, was beaten to death September 10th, 2005.
Case status is open and active.
A suspicious death that took place inside the walls of Edmonton's long-overcrowded Remand Centre was soon determined to be a homicide. Ironically, police already have the suspect in Edmonton's 25th homicide in custody -- but they don't know who he is.
Guards in the centre's maximum security wing were alerted to a prisoner's injuries by another inmate. Todd Stevenson, an Edmonton resident, was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
An emergency medical services spokesman said the inmate was taken to hospital suffering from cardiac arrest, which was later determined to have been caused by severe head trauma.
Alberta Corrections launched a Board of Inquiry and was to conduct an internal investigation. Autopsy results confirmed that cause of death injuries were consistent with an attack. Toxicology results were pending.
As would might be expected, little information has been forthcoming from inside jail walls despite some nearly fifty interviews conducted.
Stevenson was in pre-trial custody facing charges of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and possession of marijuana stemming an incident initially handled by the Stony Plain RCMP.
Police said he is not known to have had gang affiliations. Stevenson had previously served three years of federal time.
The Solicitor General's office says it's the first murder in the institution's 26-year history and just one of four in the corrections system in Alberta in the past 25 years.
The president of the union representing the site's correctional officers is blaming the incident on overcrowding at the Remand Centre, a facility built for 350 inmates that currently holds a population of over 700.
