Ronald Edward Funk, 40, was stabbed to death October 30th, 2005.
Dawn Agnes McGilvery, 30, was charged with second-degree murder.
It started as a domestic dispute call. It ended as being Edmonton's 32nd homicide of the year.
When police and paramedics arrived at Suite 306 - 11143 124 Street in northwest-central Edmonton at 6:45 in the morning they found a man dead from stab wounds. A woman was heard pleading with police, "You have to help him, you have to help him, I don't know what to do."
Neighbours had heard a loud argument before police arrived, and witnesses observing the scene were quoted as saying the man had been stabbed several times and that there was a lot of blood in the third-floor hallway of the Windsor Manor walkup.
Police took a woman into custody, interviewed her and later released her. Police first treated the death as "suspicious," with the suggestion being he might have been killed by someone acting in self defence.
The victim, Ronald Funk, had been in a two-year relationship with a woman that was described as "stormy" by immediate family. Funk and brother Rodney had recent plans to start a moving business. Funk, who had three sisters, was a father to five children and had four grandchildren.
An autopsy completed November 1st determined Funk died as the result of a stab wound.
Dawn Agnes McGilvery, 30 (and described by media as Funk's common-law wife), was charged with second-degree murder.

Dawn McGilvery was released on $2,500 cash bail -- ironically on the same day of what would have been Funk's 41st birthday.
Darlene Funk, Ronald's 37-year-old sister, told a reporter, "I don't see why they're letting her out. I can't hug my brother, I can't buy him a gift. The only gift I can give him is bad news."
The Last Link learned that two days before McGilvery allegedly stabbed Funk she threatened to kill his ex-wife. The family fears for their safety now that McGilvery is out on bail.
Darlene added she's prepared to go door-to-door to collect signatures for a petition to send McGilvery back to jail.
McGilvery's preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 8th, 2006.
