Denis Beaudoin, 54, was beaten August 14th, 2005. He died August 24th, 2005.
Case status is open and active.
Reports of what was considered to be Edmonton's 27th homicide of the year came within a five-day span of news that two other deaths were characterised as murder after the fact.
Samantha Tayleen Berg was found dead in a trucking yard on January 25th, 2005. On September 13th the Medical Examiner’s office released its report and ruled her death as a homicide.
On July 27th, 2005 Robert James Larkin was beaten in a suite at the Lodge Hotel. He remained in a coma until he died September 19th.
On September 14th, 2005 police announced that Denis Beaudoin had died August 24th as a result of a beating he had received ten days earlier from a bunch of young toughs.
On August 14th, police and emergency medical services attended to an assault call near 95 Street and 105 Avenue. However, the victim refused medical attention and declined to file a complaint with police.
Several hours later, patrolling officers observed the injured man flagging them down and had paramedics transport him to hospital. Again he declined to file a complaint, but told medical staff that he been assaulted by numerous males.
Against medical advice, Beaudoin checked himself out of the hospital on August 20th. His outpatient status was shortlived -- he was re-admitted to hospital two days later after suffering cardiac arrest while at the City Centre Mall.
Beaudoin, whose six-foot-two 200-pound frame earned him the street name of "Sasquatch," succumbed to an infection and was placed on life support. On August 24th, his family made the decision to discontinue the lifesaving effort.
Five days later, the Medical Examiner’s office determined that the cause of death was linked to complications related to the earlier assault.
Police appealed to the public to assist them in finding those responsible for Beaudoin's death.
