RCMP believe Richard Lee McNair, 47, was in the Kananaskis area between May 21st and 24th, 2006.
McNair is on the U.S. Marshal's 15 Most Wanted List after he escaped from prison while serving three life sentences for murder. He has escaped prison three times.
McNair, described by U.S. authorities as "armed and dangerous," was previously seen April 28th in Penticton, British Columbia. The next day McNair was featured on the U.S. TV show America's Most Wanted.
One of the two officers who questioned the driver of a stolen car in Penticton caught the show and thought McNair looked familiar.
The car was dusted for fingerprints which confirmed the driver was McNair.
The RCMP also found a digital camera in the car that contained several recent photos McNair took of both himself and places he visited.
McNair escaped prison in Louisiana by hiding under a pallet of bags inside a mail truck on April 13th.
Prior to his escape, McNair was serving three life sentences for murder and attempted murder after he killed one of two men who stumbled upon him in the midst of a robbery in North Dakota in 1987.
A former air force sergeant, McNair has martial arts and survival training. He is also very fit for his age and has an ability to charm people.
"He is in every sense a con artist," said a U.S. Marshal spokesman. "He's real smooth and he has a very disarming personality."
McNair is so skilled in the art of manipulation, that after he escaped prison, he was able to convince a police officer who questioned him in Ball, Louisiana, that he was just out for a casual jog.
U.S. authorities don't know why McNair came to Canada but they are working closely with the RCMP to track him down.
The RCMP is asking anyone who spots McNair to call police right away and not approach him.
The U.S. Marshals are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to his capture.
This is McNair's third escape from custody.
In 1988, after he was first arrested for murder in Minot, North Dakota. McNair used a stick of lip balm to grease his hands and escape from his handcuffs.
In 1992, McNair escaped from the state prison in North Dakota through the prison's ventilation ducts. He was recaptured the next year in Nebraska.
Considered too crafty for state prison, McNair was transferred to the federal prison system.
Richard Lee McNair also uses the aliases Lee Richard McNair, Robert Jones and Jimmy Jones. He was born December 9th, 1958, is 6-feet and weighs 210 lbs, with blue eyes and brown hair.
His skintone is medium and he has a scar on his left wrist and scars on both knees.
He most recently escaped from the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock, Louisiana.
McNair has a characteristic speech habit of repeating three times his answers to questions; saying, "Yeah, yeah, yeah," "Yep, yep, yep," or "Nope, nope, nope." He sometimes wears glasses.
For more information, visit the RCMP web site and the U.S. Marshal web site (opens as .pdf).
The TV show America's Most Wanted has an extensive profile as well as numerous photos and the video taken from the dashboard camera when McNair was questioned in Louisiana.
