At approximately 3:55 p.m. on September 3rd, 2006 a dark blue Volkswagen Jetta was westbound on Wye Road near Range Road 210, east of Edmonton and close to Sherwood Park.
The driver of the Jetta swerved to miss a porcupine on the road and in doing so struck 24-year-old Danielle Husak who was riding her bicycle on the shoulder.
After the collision, the Jetta entered the north ditch, drove along it for approximately 200 metres, drove back up onto the road and then left the scene. An area resident who heard the crash found Hysak lying in the ditch.
Husak was transported to the University of Alberta Hospital via STARS air ambulance. She suffered cracked ribs and an injured pelvis, and has to wear a temporary brace while she recovers and re-learns how to walk.
The Jetta was described by Strathcona RCMP as a dark blue, four-door older model similar to the one pictured. There may be damage on the passenger side. The driver was described as a younger, white male with short, dark blonde hair.
Husak is a Special Olympic athelete and was cleared to resume training two days before the hit and run after recovering from a previous injury. An autistic, Husak was working towards coming off of Alberta's Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program and was planning to attend college.
