Police continue to investigate Edmonton's 21st homicide of 2011 after an apparent altercation along the Avenue of Nations left a man dead.


At about 2:00 a.m. May 16th, 2011, a fight broke out between several men near 106th Avenue and 103rd Street just north of downtown. A man's body was found lying in the road when emergency services arrived.

Barry Raymond Stewart


Police have laid charges in connection with Edmonton's 20th murder of the year.


Homicide detectives were called out at about 5:00 a.m. May 12th, 2011, after 59-year-old Barry Raymond Stewart was found dead inside the Edmonton Remand Centre.


Charged with second-degree murder was 25-year-old Justin Caldwell Somers, an inmate who had been at the prison for just two days. It was one of the rare cases where police had a man in custody before the crime had been committed » full details »

John Stanley Kwiatkowski


At about 6:23 a.m. April 14th, 2011, EMS were called to a home in Rundle Heights after a woman found her common-law husband dead.


It was figured 29-year-old John Stanley Kwiatkowski had been attacked during a break-in and robbery. A two-year-old child was also struck. No suspects have been identified » full details »


The Wong-Fendelet Double Murder


Perry Kit Wong, 72, and Eloise Fendelet, 71, were last seen separately on December 27th, 2010. Their bodies were found lying side-by-side in a field west of Edmonton on April 13th, 2011.


The Wong-Fendelet double murder investigation began as a missing persons case on January 18th after friends reported the couple's disappearance. On March 23rd, homicide detectives took the matter on.

Michael Roach


An altercation behind a downtown addictions treatment facility late Sunday, April 3rd, led to the death of 49-year-old Michael Roach.


Roach died of stab wounds the next day. Michael Anderson, 50, was arrested at the scene and faced charges of second-degree murder, possession of a weapon, and possession of a narcotic » full details »

Kerry Takkiruq


Police continue to investigate the death of 19-year-old Kerry Takkiruq.


On March 31st, 2011, groundskeepers at a city-owned golf course discovered a woman's body in an area not accessible by vehicles. She was identified two weeks later after an appeal to the public.


Investigators are treating the former Nunavut woman's death as suspicious pending toxicology tests expected to take from weeks to months » full details »


Kinling Robin Fire


For the second time in 2011, a police shooting left a man dead and actions by officers under review by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.


Late March 30th, 2011, a complaint came in of a distraught man in the city's west end. According to police, 38-year-old Kinling Robin Fire emerged from his vehicle and threatened officers with a weapon.


When Fire ignored orders to drop the weapon, one officer shot twice. Fire later died in hospital.


Family said Fire was upset over a custody dispute and had digested a bottle of sleeping pills. However, they dispute claims he was armed or anticipated suicide by cop » full details »


Myron Dakota Cutknife


Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP were called to a home on the Enoch First Nation Reserve southwest of Edmonton early March 19th, 2011, after the body of a deceased male was found outside.


An autopsy determined 20-year-old Myron Dakota Cutknife died of homicide but cause of death was withheld. So far, no word on suspects » full details »


Bullen Ambassa


Police have charged a man with second-degree murder in connection with Edmonton's 14th homicide of 2011 after a serious assault took place on the city's north side.


At about 10:00 p.m. on March 25th, 2011, patrol officers responded to a report of an altercation at the Village Acres apartment complex near 67th Street and 130th Avenue.

Gerry Oar


Police investigated Edmonton's 13th homicide of 2011 after a 911 call came in from 24-year-old Gerry Oar who was reporting an assault.


At about 1:00 a.m. March 5th, 2011, the man was found by paramedics outside a two-storey rooming house at 10715 96 Street. Oar was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead from apparent stab sounds.


Police took a person of interest, found several blocks away, into custody. They later charged 42-year-old Kenneth Berard with second-degree murder and possession of a weapon. Detectives figured alcohol had fuelled a fight inside the inner-city dwelling that neighbours called a "crack shack."

Cameron James Petherbridge


Morinville RCMP continue to investigate the death of 23-year-old Cameron James Petherbridge who was found inside a home in Gibbons, Alberta.


Mounties were first called to the town of 2,600 north-east of Edmonton at about 2:00 p.m. on March 2nd, 2011, after a 911 call came in about a disturbance.

Gyozo Victor Barasso


A federal maximum-security prison in northeast Edmonton was locked down after the death of an inmate.


Edmonton Institution officials made the discovery at about 9:30 p.m. on February 26th, 2011. Edmonton police homicide detectives were called in, standard practice in cases labelled suspicious.


On March 1st, autopsy results indicated that 45-year-old Gyozo Victor Barasso had died from multiple stab wounds.

Police investigated Edmonton's eleventh homicide of 2011 after 28-year-old Stacy Steinhauer died from apparent stab wounds suffered during an altercation in a northside rooming house.


Emergency crews responded at about 2:00 a.m., February 20th, to the lane behind a residence at 12718 118 Street where they found a half-naked man laying in the snow beside a utility pole.

Domestic violence was thought to be behind Edmonton's ninth homicide of the year.


Officers were called to 2349 Millbourne Road West shortly before 3:30 p.m. February 16th, 2011, concerning the sudden death of Marietta Echavez.

For a while it looked like police were investigating yet another murder after a body was found near 18005 91A Street at about 11:00 a.m., February 13th, 2011.

Why Edmonton? The Early-2011 Murder Rate


After just 38 days into 2011, Edmonton had already recorded seven homicides. At this rate, the city was set to register a year-end death toll of 68. Toronto, a city of 2.5 million people, had recorded just 10 murders at this time. Calgary had dealt with a pair while Vancouver had yet to see a homicide.

Paramedics responding to a "medical investigation" first brought officers to a home at 4619 43 Avenue about 4:30 p.m. on December 1st, 2010. Police considered the death suspicious at the time and had to wait for further testing after an autopsy had been completed to determine the course of their investigation.


On February 10th, 2011, police announced that 45-year-old Jaswinder Takhar's death was a homicide and that it was not a random act.

A repairman working inside an apartment building in north-central Edmonton discovered the body of 40-year-old Jeanette Marie Cardinal at about 1:00 p.m. February 7th, 2011.

A dispute over a cab was thought to be behind Edmonton's sixth homicide of 2011.


At approximately 2:00 a.m. February 6th, 2011, police responded to what appeared to be a minor assault complaint outside the Buffalo Underground Night Club in the historic Boardwalk building downtown.

Cyrus Green


Edmonton police have shot and killed a man, resulting in the city's fifth homicide of the year.


While investigating an armed robbery complaint at the Coliseum transit centre just after midnight February 5th, 2011, officers confronted 17-year-old Cyrus Green near 72nd Street and 118th Avenue.


"The incident escalated to the point of an officer-involved shooting and as a result a male has died," Edmonton police said.

Christopher Allan Pirie


The discovery of a body in a snowbank sparked the investigation into Edmonton's fourth homicide of 2011.


Officers first arrived at a house at 11413 82 Street around 5:00 a.m. January 28th after a 911 call came in about a disturbance. That led them to the alley where they found several pieces of clothing on a snowbank with a pair of black winter boots sticking out of it ... and that prompted the calling out of homicide detectives.

Murray McCoy


A Strathcona County man is dead after being shot by police responding to a weapons complaint.


At approximately 9:00 a.m. January 16th, 2011, RCMP were called to a complaint of a man threatening to harm himself with a firearm inside a residence near Range Road 223 and Township Road 510, approximately 37 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, near Beaumont.


After eight hours of negotiations, the man waved his shotgun towards police "in a threatening manner."

Daniel Nickel


Police continue to investigate the death of 26-year-old Daniel Nickel after his body was found in the river valley in northeast Edmonton.


At about 8:36 a.m. January 13th, 2011, a man walking his dog along the edge of the North Saskatchewan River, near 137th Avenue and 20th Street, discovered a body and called authorities.


Police held back on releasing Nickel's cause of death but did say his murder was not the result of a random act. It was later learned Nickel was facing sexual assault charges, including having sexual contact with children under 14 years of age » full details »


Niko Arlia


Police have laid a murder charge in connection with Edmonton's second homicide of 2011 after two groups of youths met up at a hall party in the city's north end.


At about 1:25 a.m., January 9th, 2011, police were called to the Killarney Community Centre at 8720 130 A Avenue after reports of a stabbing came in.

Homicide 2010: Life And Death On Edmonton's Streets


By all accounts, 2010 was a successful year for the city's homicide detectives. Of the year's 27 murders, only five remained unsolved, about half the number left on the table in 2009.


Charges were laid against 23 persons in connection with 17 murders in 2010 – the year saw an unusual spike in the number of multiple-assailant homicides, including two deaths that saw two men charged in both murders.

Suspicious Death In Strathcona County | Dino Richard Kaz


Strathcona County RCMP continue have a mystery on their hands: two dead bodies and one missing man.


On December 19th, 2010, at about 3:40 a.m., Strathcona County Emergency Services and the RCMP dealt with a Quonset fire south of Township Road 524 at Range Road 213 in eastern Strathcona County.


After the fire was out, investigators found a body in the smoldering remains. As part of their investigation, RCMP wanted to talk with two men associated with the property.

Two Boys


Charges of first-degree murder were laid against a 31-year-old man in connection with the deaths of two boys.


Police responded to a check on the welfare call at about 11:32 p.m. on December 19th, 2010 at a townhouse on Abbottsfield Road.

Andrew Block


Police continue to investigate the city's 25th homicide of 2010 after 31-year-old Andrew Block was found shot dead inside a pickup truck in central Edmonton.


At about 1:13 p.m. December 14th, 2010, EMS and police were called to a "trouble not known" in an alley behind a four-plex at 11602 127 Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Block's body inside a Ford F-150 that looked like it had been parked in a hurry.

Sandra Darlene Lamb


Police have laid a first-degree murder charge in connection with Edmonton's 24th homicide of 2010 after 49-year-old Sandra Darlene Lamb was found dead inside her Capilano home.


On November 29th, 2011, a neighbour called police about a barking dog. That led officers to discover Lamb's lifeless body. On December 28th, 27-year-old Kirsten Lamb was charged with the death of her mother » full details »


Emmanuel Amoah and Jesse Lee James


Edmonton police made history when they laid twelve charges against six men at the same time in connection with two separate homicide cases.


On September 4th, 2010, 23-year-old Jesse Lee James was shot in broad daylight in a townhouse parking lot on Saddleback Road. Nine days later, 19-year-old Emmanuel Amoah's remains were found in south-east Edmonton.


James was a known drug dealer. Amoah appeared to be just a missing high school student.


How the two murders were linked remains a mystery, but on November 15th, 2010, police announced that second-degree murder and offering an indignity to a dead body charges had been laid. Walter Smith


At about 4:00 a.m. November 14th, 2010, a man was brought to the Grey Nuns Hospital suffering severe head injuries. He was quickly transferred to the University of Alberta Hospital for more intensive treatment.


What began as an aggravated assault investigation became more serious after 37-year-old Walter Smith died of cranial trauma. Police soon arrested Smith's brother and charged him with second-degree murder » full details »


Manfred Arthur Geisendorf


Manfred Arthur Geisendorf, 73, was beaten in his home on August 26th, 2010. He died on November 11th from complications due to multiple injuries sustained.


Police suddenly had a homicide on their hands and but they already had a suspect in mind. After issuing a Canada-wide warrant, 19-year-old Drayton Steinhauer turned himself in and was charged with second-degree murder » full details »

Corinne Nicole Sellhorn


At about 9:40 a.m. October 24th, 2010,Wetaskiwin RCMP responded to a complaint of suspicious activity at a rural residence located near Township Rd. 474 and Range Road 243, three kilometres southeast of the Town of Millet.


A gunshot was heard shortly after police arrived and an emergency response team was brought in. The bodies of Corrine Sellhorn and her husband Ron Jones were later found on the property – victims of a murder-suicide.

Scott Shane Brown


Police continue to investigate Edmonton's twenty-first homicide of 2010 after 20-year-old Scott Shane Brown was shot dead in broad daylight in the Castle Downs subdivision.


Investigators had their hands full after reports of "shots fired" came in at about 3:41 p.m. on October 14th, 2010. Arriving officers soon learned they had three crime scenes to deal with: a car in front of a house at 15908 100 Street, a nearby alley, and a tow truck found several blocks away.

The Lamont Double Murder


On May 30th, 2008, Fort Saskatchewan RCMP received a call from a farmer who found human remains in a wooded area near the intersection of Highways 45 and 831 in the Lamont area.


Thomas Joseph Shaughnessy, 46, and Thomas Robert Howells, 40, who had both been reported missing from central Alberta a month earlier, were identified as the victims of a double homicide.

Emmanuel Amoah


He was last seen alive on September 1st, 2010. His body was found in south-east Edmonton 12 days later. What happened to 19-year-old Emmanuel Amoah between those dates remains a mystery even though on October 7th police declared his death to be a case of homicide.


Despite a plea for tips, little information came forward to aid detectives in their investigation of the city's twentieth murder of the year.

Andrew Patrick McPherson


Police investigated Edmonton's nineteenth homicide of the year – the second in three days – on September 7th. At about 5:00 p.m., officers came across the body of 25-year-old Andrew Patrick McPherson in a top-floor suite of an apartment building at 14908 26 Street.


Police held back on releasing details of the homicide for two days as they waited for autopsy results. One resident told media that somebody had been chopped up by a bunch of people and that the body was brought out by police in pieces. Jesse Lee James


Police continue to investigate Edmonton's eighteenth homicide of 2010 after south side residents reported hearing shots fired shortly before the discovery of a man's body lying beside an SUV.


At about 3:15 p.m. September 4th, police arrived at the Meadow View Manor parking lot at 379 Saddleback Road, near 111th Street and 23rd Avenue. There they found the body of 23-year-old Jesse Lee James lying on the ground beside a burgundy-coloured Cadillac Escalade.

August 2010


James Lee Catholique


Police have made arrests in connection with Edmonton's seventeenth homicide of 2010 after 23-year-old James Lee Catholique was found lying in a pool of blood behind a building at 10010 107A Avenue, just north of downtown.


At about 6:18 p.m. August 26th, 2010, a person rushed into the Brick furniture store asking staff to call 911 to report "some kind of disturbance." Emergency services arrived and Catholique, having suffered severe head trauma, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Zachariah Thompson


Police continue to investigate the death of 18-year-old Zachariah Thompson.


At about 6:30 p.m. August 19th, 2010, emergency services responded to reports of gunfire at 16 Meadow Crescent in the Maple Ridge mobile home park, near 17th Street and 63rd Avenue. Thompson was rushed to hospital where he remained in critical condition. Homicide detectives were immediately brought in to investigate.

Scott Preece


Police continue to investigate Edmonton's sixteenth homicide of 2010 after 28-year-old Scott Preece was found stabbed near the Callingwood Crossing strip mall at 172nd Street and 69th Avenue.


Neighbours reported hearing screams at about 3:11 a.m. August 7th, 2010, with one resident seeing a man in the middle of the street shouting "Oh God help me, please help me! I killed him, he died!" » full details »

Angel Agnes Priscilla Bird


A dispute between longtime friends over a male buddy appeared to be at the root of an altercation that left one woman dead and another facing charges in connection with Edmonton's fifteenth homicide of 2010.


Police received several 911 calls at about 2:30 a.m. July 31st, 2010, reporting that a woman had been injured at a condo in the city's northeast.


23-year-old Angel Agnes Priscilla Bird was rushed to hospital but later died. Police charged 19-year-old Ashley Rose Sinclair with second-degree murder and possession of a dangerous weapon. A man was later charged for helping Sinclair evade police » full details »


Rajpinder Kaur Sehmbi


The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating Edmonton's fourteenth homicide of 2010 after a woman's body was found inside a home and an RCMP officer was taken into custody.


Shortly after 4:00 a.m. July 10th, 2010, residents near a home at 44 Jefferson Road reported hearing screams followed by five to eight loud "cracks." Police arrived and found the body of 29-year-old Rajpinder Kaur Sehmbi.

Betty Anne Gagnon


After a seven-month investigation, Strathcona County RCMP laid charges in connection with the death of 48-year-old Betty Anne Gagnon.


Gagon died November 20th, 2009, outside a convenience store east of Edmonton. At the time police regarded her death as suspicious.

The Lago Lindo House Explosion


On June 20th, 2010, an explosion inside a house at 18011 91 A Street took the lives of four people and ripped a neighbourhood apart – literally.


While the cause of the blast had yet to be determined, police declared that three people died as the result of a homicidal act.


Jeanne Cathleen Heard, 47, Craig Donald Huber, 29, and Bradley Warren Winter, 26, died in the explosion. Huber and Winter happened to be in house beside the home that blew up and died of blast-related injuries.

Bao Tien Cao


The investigation into the death of Bao Tien Cao began when Fort Saskatchewan RCMP got a call on June 18th, 2010 about a male body found in a ditch north of Edmonton.

Rodney Stan Petryk


Police have charged a woman in connection with Edmonton's tenth homicide of 2010, the stabbing death of 44-year-old Rodney Stan Petryk.


Officers responded to a "check on the welfare" call at about 11:38 p.m. June 13th, 2010 and discovered a man's body inside a home at 12245 93 Street.


Paramedics declared the man dead at the scene and homicide detectives were called to investigate.


A single person was taken into custody and police waited until autopsy results came back before announcing that 43-year-old Loralyn Thom – Petryk's common-law wife – had been charged with second-degree murder » full details »


Frank James Jerome


Police have charged a man in connection with Edmonton's ninth homicide of 2010, the fifth in three weeks.


Just before 1:15 a.m. June 11th, 2010 patrol officers from north division were called to a main-floor unit of the four-storey New Haven Estates apartment complex in Claireview about a noisy party. About a half-hour later police were called back to the suite – this time about a report of an assault causing bodily harm.


EMS took a 51-year-old man to hospital where he succumbed to stabbing injuries a few hours later.

Apichat Sudsaneh


Police investigated Edmonton's eighth homicide of 2010 after a man was stabbed defending friends.


At about 1:00 a.m., June 6th, two men left a house party at multi-unit dwelling at 9849 80 Avenue and were on their way to a nearby convenience store when they ran into a group of five or six males.

May 2010


Morinville Toddler


On May 28th, 2010, RCMP announced that an adult had been arrested in connection with the death of a 21-month-old toddler.


On March 1st, a Morinville-area child was brought to an Edmonton hospital. She died two days later. An atuposy led police to treat the matter as a homicide.

Heather Rae Thurier


Police investigated Edmonton's seventh homicide of 2010 after 23-year-old Heather Rae Thurier was gunned down inside the Stadium LRT station.


At about 10:20 p.m. May 21st, 2010, officers responded to a report of shots fired. When police arrived they found Thurier lying face down and suffering significant head trauma. She was pronounced her dead at the scene. Early reports indicate a sawed-off shotgun was used.


Thurier's family said she had asked a man for a cigarette. Instead of offering a smoke, he shot her in the face.

Mohammad Bashir Khan


Police have laid charges in connection with Edmonton's sixth homicide of 2010, the second in as many days.


Officers were called at about 4:30 a.m. May 18th, 2010 to the All Hours Steak Pizza & Donair restaurant at 11922 129 Avenue. There they found a man suffering serious stab wounds.


Despite being rushed by ambulance with police escort to the Royal Alexandra Hospital trauma centre, 56-year-old Mohammed Bashir Khan was pronounced dead on arrival.

Daniel Louis Thomas


Police investigated Edmonton's fifth homicide of 2010 after the body of 25-year-old Daniel Louis Thomas was found lying face down on the stairway beneath the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald.


A passerby called emergency services shortly before 2:00 a.m., May 17th after coming across Thomas' body. Police later issued a description of a person seen with Thomas shortly before his death.

Jayden and Connor McConnell


On May 6th, 2010, a woman accused of double-homicide had her psychiatric assessment extended for another 30 days.


31-year-old Allyson Louise McConnell has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her sons Jayden and Connor. McConnell was remanded into custody at the Alberta Hospital.


The assessment was first ordered on April 6th. McConnell's next court appearance was set for June 3rd.

Vern Donald Derocher


On April 7th, 2010 RCMP revealed that 40-year-old Vern Donald Derocher had died five days earlier from injuries received on Enoch First Nation, immediately west of Edmonton.


At about 4:09 a.m. on April 2nd Enoch RCMP had responded to a stabbing call at a home on the reserve. Derocher, visiting from Hay River, Northwest Territories, was rushed to the University of Alberta Hospital where he died about 12 hours later » full details »

The Strathcona County Double Homicide


On March 25th, 2010, Strathcona County RCMP revealed they were missing a key piece of evidence in their investigation of the deaths of Barry Boenke and Susan Trudel.


Boenke and Trudel were found dead June 1st, 2009, on a rural property east of Sherwood Park. Two teens, who had run away from a nearby group home, have been charged with first-degree murder.

Garth Radons


Police investigated Edmonton's fourth homicide of 2010, a workplace murder-suicide that took place on March 12th, 2010 that left a third man in hospital with life-threatening injuries.


Garth Radons, 39, and Dave Burns, 54, died after a shooting took place inside Great West Chrylser Jeep at 17817 Stony Plain Road. It was later revealed Burns had a previous conviction for manslaughter.

Peppino Bassani


Stony Plain RCMP have charged a man after investigating a suspicious death on a property immediately west of Edmonton.


On March 5th, 2010 the body of 85-year-old Peppino Bassani was found on an acreage near Township 531 and Range Road 261. An autopsy later determined he had died from blunt force trauma.


Police charged 38-year-old Kevin Michalchuk with second-degree murder and assault » full details »

Police continue to investigate Edmonton's third homicide of 2010, the shooting death of 28-year-old Justin Lee Sullivan.


Officers were called to the Twilight After Hours Club downtown at about 8:00 a.m., February 15th, to find one man laying injured on the sidewalk and a second man deceased inside a vehicle up the street.

Sara Ann Sanders


Officers were first called to a downtown residence on October 15th, 2009 after the body of 28-year-old Sara Sanders was discovered. On November 4th police announced they issued a second-degree murder arrest warrant for 40-year-old Michael Bryan Flanigan. He was apprehended in Saskatchewan the next day.

Melvin Edward Hansen


On December 12th, 2009 – in the middle of a record-setting cold snap – the body of 21-year-old Melvin Edward Hansen was found lying in the front yard of a home at 9012 130 Avenue.

Bernadette Auger


Edmonton police were under investigation in connection with the city's second homicide of 2010 – the officer-involved shooting of 48-year-old Bernadette Auger.


At about 2:00 p.m. January 16th, 2010 a gun call brought police to an apartment building at 8411 119 Avenue. Witnesses then reported hearing at least two gunshots and an ambulance was quickly called to scene.

Leslie Ann Talley


Police continue to investigate Edmonton's first homicide of 2010 – the beating death of Leslie Ann Talley.


A report of a partially-clad woman laying dead beside a truck brought investigators to 151st Avenue at about 31st Street, near Kirkness Park, at about 4:15 a.m. January 6th, 2010.
